Euro 2024: France Pip Austria To Win Opener
Euro 2024: France Pip Austria To Win Opener
France beat a hard fightig Austria in a balanced Euro 2024 opener. Granted, France had the best of the game but Austria came close to scoring whenever they threatened.

Both teams had 3 shots on target. And it was an own goal by Austria’s Wober that settled the match. In fact, Austria had more shots off target, 14 vs 6 for France.
Notably, Kylian Mbappe missed a chance he would score 95% of all the time. Still, he threatened to score a second in the 55th minute when facing the Austria keeper.
But his curled effort just hit the post to continue his frustrations in the Euro 2024 opener. In injury time Giroud somehow miscued the ball from inside the penalty area, failing to make it 2-0.
France were nearly made to pay after Austria almost snatched a point in the Euro 2024 opening game.
Key Contributions of Mbappe and Kante Lead France to Victory Against Determined Austria
Mbappe’s magical but fortunate moment secured a winning start for France against Austria.
He also suffered a late injury scare and had a mixed performance in finishing but made a decisive contribution.
Austria’s Missed Chances and Frustrations in the Euro 2024 Opener
Austria missed their best chance and were frustrated by poor refereeing decisions, including a disputed goal kick.
N’Golo Kante’s Magnificent Return
Kante’s superb individual performance after two years away from the international stage provided the glue for France’s win.
His defensive shield, awareness, and composure on the ball were key to victory.
France’s Hard-Fought Victory
France, despite not being at their best, did enough to get past a determined Austria thanks to Kante’s display and Mbappe’s decisive moment.
Overall Evaluation
Austria showed why they had lost only one of their last 16 matches, making France work hard for the win.
Kante’s display and Mbappe’s decisive contribution set the platform for France’s next game against the Netherlands.
Referee Baffles
On another note, the match referee almost ruined the game towards the end when allowing Austria to make a substitution and denying France, despite Mbappe being out injured.
On sensing that the referee had refused to allow the substitution, Mbappe went back to the fiel holding his injured nose.
He sat down on the field to atract the referee’s attention. He got a yellow card for it but the referee’s action left everyone baffled.
