Gareth Southgate Trims England Euro 2024 Squad: Key Players Excluded

Gareth Southgate’s Latest Squad Changes

Gareth Southgate, England’s national football team manager, has made significant adjustments to his squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament. Among the latest players to be released are Liverpool stars Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah. This decision follows the earlier exclusion of Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison.

Key Players Left Out

The Liverpool duo, Curtis Jones and Jarell Quansah, were initially part of the provisional 33-man squad. However, they will not be making the final cut for the tournament. According to Matt Law of The Daily Telegraph, both players were informed of Southgate’s decision before England’s final friendly match against Iceland.

Further Reductions Expected

Southgate’s job is not yet complete, as he still needs to drop four more players to meet the tournament’s requirement of a 26-man squad. Manchester City star Jack Grealish is among those rumored to be at risk of exclusion.

Upcoming Matches and Final Decisions

England will face Iceland in a friendly match at Wembley Stadium on June 7. This will be the last opportunity for Southgate to assess his players before making the final squad announcement. England’s first match in the Euro 2024 tournament will be against Serbia on June 16.

Changes in Squad Regulations

In a move to ease the demands on players due to fixture congestion, UEFA has increased the squad size from 23 to 26 players. This adjustment allows national team coaches more flexibility in managing their squads during the tournament.
