World Cup: Kenya’s Junior Starlets in Tough Group
Junior Starlets Draw Tough Opponents in World Cup
Kenya’s Junior Starlets have been drawn in a difficult Group C for their debut at the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup. They play experienced opponents England, North Korea and Mexico.

The Kenya U17 women’s team, known as the Junior Starlets, will compete against England, Korea DPR and Mexico at the upcoming youth soccer World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
The draw put the Junior Starlets in Group C. They will play their first match on October 17th against England. England has reached the semi-finals before.
Group C also includes two-time champions Korea DPR, who won the tournaments in 2008 and 2016.
The Junior Starlets will have a difficult time against this experienced North Korean team.
Mexico, the 2018 runners-up, round out Group C. The Starlets will need to perform their best to succeed against Mexico, who have attended six times before.
The other groups are A with host Dominican Republic, Ecuador, New Zealand and Nigeria.
Group B contains Spain, USA, Korea Republic and Colombia. Group D is Japan, Poland, Brazil and Zambia.
This will be Kenya’s debut in the youth World Cup competition. The Junior Starlets will have to give their all in tough Group C to advance from the group stage.
How do the Junior Starlets’ group opponents compare in terms of their past performances at the U17 Women’s World CuP.
History of their opponents
Here’s a quick comparison of how the Junior Starlets’ group opponents have fared in past U17 Women’s World Cups.
England: The Young Lionesses have played in the tournament twice before, with their best result coming in 2008 when they finished fourth.
North Korea: Korea DPR are the most experienced team in the group. They’ve made seven appearances and lifted the trophy in 2008 and 2016, proving their dominance at this level.
Mexico: El Tri’s women’s youth side has attended six times, including a runner-up finish in 2018. They’re always a tough challenger who know how to succeed in big games.
When you compare these results, it’s clear the Junior Starlets have drawn the short straw in Group C.
Both North Korea and Mexico have reached the final, while even England has cracked the top four. The junior Starlets will have their work cut out for them against such powerful opponents with deep international youth pedigree.
To stand a chance of advancing, Kenya will likely need to produce their best ever performance at this stage of the competition.
Young forward Jentrix Shikangwa will aim to shine against the internationally-tested competition.
