Premier League Clubs Decide VAR Fate: Six Key Changes Planned
What Happened?
Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) submitted a motion to abandon VAR after a season fraught with controversy. The technology frequently drew criticism from players and fans. Following this, a vote was held, and the clubs overwhelmingly voted 19-1 in favor of keeping VAR. For such a proposal to pass, 14 of the 20 clubs would have needed to vote in favor, but it was soundly defeated.
What the Premier League Said
A statement from the Premier League read: “Premier League clubs today voted in favor of continuing to operate VAR in the Premier League. While VAR produces more accurate decision-making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and supporters.” The statement emphasized that all stakeholders, including PGMOL, the Premier League, and the clubs, must play essential roles in enhancing the system and its public image.
The Bigger Picture
Following discussions, the Premier League highlighted six areas where improvements are needed:
- Maintaining a high threshold for VAR intervention to ensure greater consistency and fewer interruptions.
- Reducing delays, mainly through the introduction of Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT).
- Improving fan experience by reducing delays, providing in-stadium announcements after VAR decisions, and enhancing big screen replays.
- Collaborating with PGMOL to implement robust VAR training focused on speed and accuracy.
- Increasing transparency and communication around VAR, including expanded communications from the Premier League match center and through broadcast programming.
- Launching a fan and stakeholder communication campaign to clarify VAR’s role in the game.
What Next for the Premier League?
Next season, the Premier League will introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology, previously used in the Champions League and FIFA World Cup. This technology aims to make decisions quicker and more precise, thereby improving the flow of the game and enhancing the overall experience for players, officials, and fans alike.
