Kylian Mbappé’s Real Madrid Contract: A Dream Come True?
Kylian Mbappé Finally Joins Real Madrid
French soccer star Kylian Mbappé is finally joining the Spanish super-club Real Madrid after years of transfer rumors. The club announced the exciting news on Monday. At 25, Mbappé will earn $16.2 million (EUR 15 million) a year after taxes, along with an estimated $163 million (EUR 150 million) signing bonus spread over five years. This puts his average annual earnings just under $50 million.
A Huge Paycheck, but Not the Biggest
While $50 million a year is a lot of money, it’s still way below the one-year, $776 million contract offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal last summer. Mbappé is essentially missing out on over $700 million when comparing the annual value of both deals. But why didn’t he take the more lucrative offer?
Mbappé has already made roughly $288 million in his career, according to capology.com estimates. The $776 million offer from Al Hilal would have been the biggest one-year contract for any professional athlete ever. Many high-profile soccer players have taken massive paydays to join Saudi Arabia’s top league, the Saudi Pro League, recently. Cristiano Ronaldo, for example, earns an estimated $213 million this year from Al Nassr, while Karim Benzema is reportedly making $214 million from his two-year contract with Al-Ittihad.
Why Real Madrid?
So, why choose Real Madrid over the more lucrative Saudi offer? As commentator Matheson put it, “Going to Saudi Arabia would basically be retirement from top-level club soccer.” Mbappé likely sees more value in continuing his career at the highest level, and Real Madrid offers that. Plus, after another five or ten years at Real, he can always take the big payday later, like Messi in Miami or Ronaldo in Saudi Arabia.
Mbappé himself acknowledged the move in an Instagram post, calling it a “dream come true.” He said, “So happy and proud to join the club of my dreams… Can’t wait to see you, Madridistas, and thanks for your unbelievable support. ¡Hala Madrid!”
Joining an All-Star Squad
Mbappé joins a Real Madrid team already featuring Champions League-winning stars like Vinícius Júnior, Rodrygo, and Jude Bellingham. As a World Cup winner with France, Mbappé leaves Paris Saint-Germain as its all-time leading scorer with 256 goals, including a club record 175 in France’s Ligue 1.
Mbappé’s move to Real Madrid is not just about money; it’s about legacy and competing at the highest level. Now, the world waits to see what magic he will bring to the Santiago Bernabéu.
