Mbappe’s Final PSG Home Game Ends in Defeat
Kylian Mbappe, scored a goal in his final home appearance as a Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) player on Sunday. However, the French champions suffered a surprising 3-1 defeat against Toulouse on the night to dampen their celebrations for their Ligue 1 championship trophy.
Real Madrid fans expectant with anticipation
Real Madrid fans are buzzing with excitement. The possibility of France captain Kylian Mbappe joining their club must be great news.
In a video posted on social media on Friday, Mbappe confirmed that he would be leaving PSG when his contract expires at the end of the season, ending his seven-year association with the club.
It has been an open secret since February that Real Madrid is likely to be his next destination, as he privately informed PSG of his intention to move on.
Opened the scoring
Mbappe, wearing the captain’s armband, opened the scoring early on against Toulouse. The goal brought his tally for the season to an impressive 44 goals in all competitions.
However, Thijs Dallinga quickly equalized for the visitors. Notably, Mbappe was the only player to retain his place in the team. PSG made 10 changes from the team knocked out of the Champions League by Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals.
Yann Gboho put Toulouse ahead with a brilliant strike in the second half, and Frank Magri sealed the win in stoppage time. This loss was only PSG’s second in Ligue 1 this season and their first in 27 games since September.
Mbappe’s Impressive Record at PSG
Since joining PSG from Monaco in 2017 for a staggering €180 million ($194 million), Mbappe has scored a remarkable 256 goals for the club, a new club-record tally.
His total of 191 goals in France’s top flight, including 16 with Monaco at the beginning of his career, places him seventh on the all-time list.
Enrique praises Mbappe
Coach Luis Enrique described the 25-year-old as “a club legend” when he spoke to the media on the eve of the game. Yet, there were some jeers from the crowd for the striker when the teams were announced before the match.
Despite this, a huge display featuring Mbappe in his trademark pose with folded arms was unveiled before kickoff at one end of the stadium.
Looking Ahead for Mbappe and PSG
PSG had already secured their 12th French title, and 10th in the last 12 years, before facing Toulouse.
The club had indicated that the post-match celebrations would be dedicated to their title triumph rather than a specific tribute to Mbappe himself.
However, Mbappe’s departure from PSG means he will leave the club without ever having won the UEFA Champions League, the pinnacle of European football.
With Mbappe, PSG reached the Champions League final in 2020 and have since reached the semi-finals twice. Now, the France captain will hope to fulfill his dream of lifting the prestigious trophy at his next club.
PSG still has a chance to complete a clean sweep of domestic honors this season as they face Lyon in the French Cup final on May 25.
In addition to Ligue 1, they have already won the Champions Trophy, France’s equivalent of a super cup.
Luis Enrique’s team will conclude their league campaign with a visit to Nice on Wednesday before their final game of the season against Metz on Sunday.
