Newcastle vs Arsenal Goal. Offside, Incompetence, Corruption, or …?
Controversial Newcastle vs Arsenal Goal. Officials’ incompetence, corruption, or..? Offside rule explained.
Newcastle’s controversially allowed goal has left a sour taste and questions on many people’s lips. The talking point is why the officials were so incompetent in making obvious decisions. Some decisions didn’t need a lot of debate.
I understand Arteta’s frustrations. Newcastle will e relieved because they were always on the back foot. So getting the goal was like hitting a jackpot. For one did Havertz foul deserve a yellow or red? What about Guimarres slap or whatever on Jorginho? And the one on Martinelli?
Now, was the ball out of play? Why were there no lines dawn or several replays to check if truly the ball was out? What was the space between the ball and the line?
These are the images vs some ridiculous antifootball arguments’ images.
So Bein sports showed this graphic saying the ball didn’t cross the line yesterday! They even made the ball change colour from yellow to the ball from the World Cup 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 pic.twitter.com/maeEXFeB7T

On Joellington push on Gabriel, do players play football with their hands on the back and neck of the player in front of them? If it was Gabriel who pushed Joelington in the box when about to score, wouldn’t have been a penalty and a possible red card?

If the incident was outside the box, wouldn’t have bee a simple foul? And to think that it took over 4 minutes to check and still the officials got it wrong? Amazing. Check it out here.
I, for one agree with Arteta that it was a disgrace. A disgrace since that goal destroyed a highly intensive and entertaining game for the fans of both teams. Of course Newcastle was happy, (who wouldn’t), but it was a different dull game after that with Newcastle defending the gift. No wonder Arsenal football club agrees with Arteta rant too, though it should be controlled, somehow.
Forget the Bruno arm to the face
Forget the ball maybe going out
Forget the “foul” on Gabriel
Forget the offside

And to cap it all, the said officials said they had no evidence of a clear offside. But surely, did they need a detective to go look for evidence of an obvious presence or absence of an offside player? Aren’t the rules clear of what makes up an offside in football?
For the records, FIFA law no. 11 states that “Being in an offside position is not an offence in itself, but a player so positioned when the ball is played by a teammate can be judged guilty of an offside offence if they receive the ball or will otherwise become “involved in active play”, will “interfere with an opponent”, or will “gain an advantage” by being in that position” (Wikipedia)
So, FIFA offside rules are clear, you get evidence by drawing a line to decide if a player who received the ball was ahead of the defending player.
Did someone say Gabriel was there with Joelington? If Joelington scored despite the foul, he wouldn’t have been in an offside position. but Gordon who scores is in an offside position since he is ahead of Raya when he receives the ball. In this case Raya is the last defender, and Gabriel is like the goalkeeper.
According to the offside rules, and if you assume that the goalkeeper comes forward and a defender remains closest to the goalpost. In that case, the defender becomes the last line of defence, and if the goalkeeper stands just after that defender, the goalkeeper becomes the second line of defence and an offside line will form parallel to the goalkeeper. In that situation, the offside rule will apply.
So, why didn’t the officials draw the lines? Who was supposed to give the evidence? Aren’t the cameras right in front of them? Why didn’t they ask the referee to go to the monitor to look again? Did the officials fear that the referee would overrule the goal if he went to the monitor?
Why should teams be training hard only for rogue officials to ruin the game? Something must be done, especially in the premier league against certain teams? Remember Liverpool/Spurs? Arsenal/Chelsea?
Or maybe, just may be are the officials hired with clear instructions not to apply the rules? If there is no clear evidence, ask the referee to go take a look instead of making a decision without evidence.
